Emily is a slice of life. She's always been opinionated, and has been on an emotional roller coaster from the day she was born. I remember trying to get a picture for Christmas cards when Bob was three, she was one, and Ann was a newborn. Ann lay in her carrier. Not a problem. Bob stood behind Ann, as still as could be. But Emily? We tried to have her sit on a rocking horse, but she'd have nothing to do with it. She was determined to run around the house and refused to sit still for a minute to get her picture taken. It took three rolls of film, and to this day, that is one of my most cherished pictures, knowing how hard it was to have her sit still. Since Emily has been a determined child from the minute she was born, she's been fun to watch grow up. It's always been her way or the highway, but she has a heart of gold, deep down underneath. She also has been very career oriented from early on, knowing what she wanted to do with her life, even though it wasn't possible. When Emily was about two years old, I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. "A firetruck," she answered. I laughed. "Don't you mean a fireman or woman?" "No. I want to be the truck. I'm going to be a firetruck no matter what, and you can't change my mind." "But don't you want to be human when you grow up? I mean, a firetruck is a machine." "No. I want to be the truck. They have the most fun, making all the noises." And off she ran to play. I guess when you're determined, it can happen...and no, she no longer wants to be a firetruck. She's graduated from that thought. She now wants to get a degree in math, one in computer science, one in architecture, and on the side, wants to learn many foreign languages and be an interior designer for the buildings she builds. Ambition. I think that's her middle name. |
