Traveling With Kids

Ahhh...vacations...summertime and fun, right? We think so, because we can explore other parts of the nation when we go on vacation. I have a friend whose goal was to visit all fifty states before the kids left home. They almost accomplished their goal, because their youngest went off to college this year. I think they were in the thirties for states.

I decided we should have the same goal. My parents, who were educators, believed that one way to make a child smart was to take them on vacation. They were exposed to things they'd never see at home and may actually learn something. So, when Bob was three months old, we started traveling. We drove from North Carolina to Virginia Beach. We've been traveling ever since, and my children have been to over 25 states thus far. Granted, we don't do three or four states on most trips, but we have. We've driven from Kansas to Pennsylvania, down to North Carolina and back to Kansas. We also drove from Kansas to Colorado, up to Wyoming, through Nebraska and back home again. We've seen Mount Rushmore. We've been to DisneyWorld twice. We flew to Seattle. Our children have experienced more traveling than I did by the time I was thirty. I'm seeing a lot of things for the first time, right along with them.

Why do I say to travel? In Ann's fifth grade class, the students were to tell how many states they'd ever been to. Can you believe that many, and not just one or two, of these students had NEVER been out of Wisconsin their entire lives? Considering we're only about five hours from the Mall of America, four hours to Chicago, two hours to Michigan...they'd never been outside the state? I was amazed. For vacations, they go up to the town of Crivitz, just about an hour or two north of here, to stay in a cabin where they need to cook and clean, etc. That sounds like work to me, honestly. Yes, it's nice to get away to the woods, but personally, I like to go other places to do that.

So, if you can do it, travel with your kids. It'll give you memories like you wouldn't believe. We still laugh about the time I had three children with strep throat in DisneyWorld and had to keep their medicines on ice the whole time. Or when we filled up the gas tank for the trip back from North Carolina to Kansas, but it was diesel...and a rental car that took regular gas. Oh, that was fun.

Traveling creates memories and a bond like you wouldn't believe with your children. I would advise going places the kids really want to see. Otherwise, you'll be hearing about it for years.
